Wasteful ways of Malaysian gluttons

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is a food heaven – but it is also one giant food dump.

It generates about 15,000 tonnes of food and kitchen waste daily – enough to fill 7.5 football fields or to feed 7.5 million people a day.

This is a hike from 2011, where about 930 tonnes of unconsumed food were thrown away every day. And that was double the 2009 figure.

E-waste danger looms

HEALTH THREAT: Discarded handphones and computers contain heavy metals that can seep into the ground

KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYSIANS’ desire for electronic gadgets, especially handphones, is contributing to rising electronic waste, or e-waste.

The Department of Environment said yesterday that discarded handphones should be recycled to avoid environment-related health complications. There are 37 million registered units.

Sorting through a messy issue

LAST week Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung announced that the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation is looking at suitable locations and systems for waste disposal management in Malaysia.

Two key pieces of legislation in this area are the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) and Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation Act 2007 (Act 673), both of which are excellent pieces of legislation which provide the framework for more green and sustainable ways of waste management.
