BUSINESSES in Selangor have collected RM1,871,547.55 from the sale of plastic bags at 20 sen each since the state-wide plastic- and polystyrene-free campaign began on Jan 1.
According to the latest data (until May), 63.98% of the plastic bags were sold at supermarkets, followed by 36.02% at eateries.
Selangor State Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Elizabeth Wong said this in reply to Lee Kee Hiong (DAP-Kuala Kubu Baru).
“At the moment, we will not punish those who defy the guidelines (and still hand out free plastic bags). However, they may have a problem when renewing their business permits next year.
