PETALING JAYA: After years of getting a bad name for wasting food at buffets, Malaysians have finally begun to practise moderation.

Based on feedback from its members, Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) chief executive officer Reginald T. Pereira said there had been an increase in the number of cleared plates by diners.

GEORGE TOWN: Homeowners can turn their kitchen waste into compost and growth promoters instead of discarding them, said Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) education officer N.V. Subbarow.

He said using kitchen waste for these purposes can help in reducing waste.

PETALING JAYA: Rat infestations in cities and residential areas are compounded by the Malaysian habit of wasting food and their couldn’t-care-less attitude in waste disposal.

Fomca deputy president Muhammad Sha’ani Abdullah said while proper garbage collection services were vital, Malaysians should also be responsible about their consumption of food.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is a food heaven – but it is also one giant food dump.

It generates about 15,000 tonnes of food and kitchen waste daily – enough to fill 7.5 football fields or to feed 7.5 million people a day.

This is a hike from 2011, where about 930 tonnes of unconsumed food were thrown away every day. And that was double the 2009 figure.

HEALTH THREAT: Discarded handphones and computers contain heavy metals that can seep into the ground

KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYSIANS’ desire for electronic gadgets, especially handphones, is contributing to rising electronic waste, or e-waste.

The Department of Environment said yesterday that discarded handphones should be recycled to avoid environment-related health complications. There are 37 million registered units.
